How to Pick Lottery Numbers — A Data-Driven Guide
There is no method that can predict winning lottery numbers — each draw is entirely random. However, you can make informed selections by choosing combinations that align with the statistical patterns found in thousands of historical draws. Here is how to do it.
Step 1 — Check the sum range
The sum of the winning numbers in most lotteries falls within a predictable range most of the time. For EuroMillions (5 balls from 50), around 70% of draws produce a sum between 95 and 160. For Irish Lotto (6 balls from 47), the typical range is roughly 130–195.
Avoid combinations whose numbers add up to very low or very high totals. For example, picking 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 gives a sum of 15 — a sum that has never appeared in EuroMillions history. Use our statistics pages to find the current 70% sum range for your lottery.
Step 2 — Balance odd and even numbers
In a 6-ball lottery, the most common winning patterns are 3 odd / 3 even or 4 odd / 2 even (or 2 odd / 4 even). All-odd or all-even combinations appear in only a small fraction of draws.
Check the odd/even distribution table on our statistics pages to see which split is most common for your lottery.
Step 3 — Balance low and high numbers
Similarly, combinations drawn entirely from the low half or high half of the number range are uncommon. For Irish Lotto (1–47), the midpoint is 24. A combination of all numbers below 24, or all above, occurs infrequently.
Aim for a balanced spread of low and high numbers.
Step 4 — Include a mix of hot, warm and cold numbers
Rather than picking all recently-drawn (hot) numbers or all rarely-drawn (cold) numbers, the Gail Howard method recommends a mix. Our analyser highlights each number with a heat indicator (hot / warm / neutral / cold) based on the last 50 draws.
A combination with 1–3 hot numbers, 1–2 cold numbers and the rest neutral scores best on the hot/cold balance dimension.
Step 5 — Use the analyser to score your combination
Once you have a combination in mind, enter it into the Lottery Analyser. It will score your picks across 9 strategy dimensions and give an overall rating from Below Average to Excellent. You can also use the "Suggested numbers" feature to auto-generate combinations optimised for each strategy.
A score of 162+ (Very Good) means your combination aligns well with most of the historical pattern criteria.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to pick lottery numbers?
Statistically, all combinations have equal odds. For entertainment purposes, choosing combinations that balance odd/even numbers, low/high numbers, and include a mix of hot and cold numbers aligns most closely with historical winning patterns.
Should I use quick picks or choose my own numbers?
Quick picks are randomly generated and have the same mathematical probability as any chosen combination. Choosing your own numbers allows you to apply strategy frameworks, but this does not improve your actual odds of winning.
What numbers should I avoid in the lottery?
Avoid combinations with extremely low or high sums, all-consecutive numbers (e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6), all odd or all even selections, and numbers clustered in just one section of the range. These patterns appear very rarely in historical draws.
How do I use the Lottery Analyser?
Select your lottery from the homepage, enter your numbers using the ball picker, and click Analyse. The tool scores your combination across 9 expert strategies and explains where your picks are strong or weak.
